Summary

What would you change if you could go back in time?

In a small back alley in Tokyo, there is a café which has been serving carefully brewed coffee for more than one hundred years。 But this coffee shop offers its customers a unique experience: the chance to travel back in time。

In Before the Coffee Gets Cold, we meet four visitors, each of whom is hoping to make use of the café’s time-travelling offer, in order to: confront the man who left them, receive a letter from their husband whose memory has been taken by early onset Alzheimer's, to see their sister one last time, and to meet the daughter they never got the chance to know。

But the journey into the past does not come without risks: customers must sit in a particular seat, they cannot leave the café, and finally, they must return to the present before the coffee gets cold 。 。 。

Toshikazu Kawaguchi’s beautiful, moving story – translated from Japanese by Geoffrey Trousselot – explores the age-old question: what would you change if you could travel back in time? More importantly, who would you want to meet, maybe for one last time?

Dnf。 Not sure if things got lost in translation, but if felt like watching a non-english show with really bad dubbing and audio description。Also, very predictable。

did i enjoy this book? yes。 i loved the premise of it and it made me question whether or not i would go back in time and why。 i also enjoyed that it had 4 separate stories about different types of relationships。do i think its a bit overhyped? also yes

A collection of interconnected stories explores regret, grief and acceptance in a completely unexpected way。

I found it really hard to get into the story so it took me a while to finish but I liked the ending and moral of the story。

Francine

Beautiful and heartwarming story but the writing isn’t for me。

A surprisingly good read。 I think the poetry of it kind of got lost in translation。 But intriguing。

Very interesting concept。 I loved the plot。 Writing was a little hard to read at times, but I’m sure it’s just from the translation!

Interesting and unique plot with memorable characters though I had trouble with repetition, flat detailing, and pacing。 Perhaps some of the depth and meaning are lost in translation though, it's hard to tell。 Regardless, I'm pleased to have encountered a new author, that's always fun! Laughed, cried, left wanting more。 This book is not everyone’s cup of tea (or should I say coffee?)。 It’s written around the characters and not based on a story。 However it touches on some lovely values and certainly makes you appreciate life。 Just remember…drink the coffee before it gets cold ☕️。

Ellen Lewis

A really interesting book that makes more sense the more you read and understand the intertwined nature of the characters。 It was sometimes difficult to follow and understand some cultural references, however it was a pleasant and thoughtful novel。

This book takes the overwhelming aspects of life: love, loss, grief, mortality, the unknown future; and, through a handful of characters and simple stories of time travel where the primary rule is that nothing can or will change about the present no matter what, Before the Coffee Gets Cold distills these terrifying truths of life into things that seem survivable after all。 Somehow, a few snippets of lives and experiences within one (somewhat magical) café create an equal parts heartbreaking and This book takes the overwhelming aspects of life: love, loss, grief, mortality, the unknown future; and, through a handful of characters and simple stories of time travel where the primary rule is that nothing can or will change about the present no matter what, Before the Coffee Gets Cold distills these terrifying truths of life into things that seem survivable after all。 Somehow, a few snippets of lives and experiences within one (somewhat magical) café create an equal parts heartbreaking and heartwarming microcosm of the human experience。 As a barista and a human, you bet I was crying an average of once per chapter。 The story is uplifting and bittersweet, just like coffee。 。。。more

9。5/10 - I loved all the short stories and how there was an over arching story between the characters。 There were many life lessons in the book which I thoroughly enjoyed

Morgan

Interesting concept , ending fell flat for me。 I think this would be really cool to see as a staged production。

Have you ever read a book that as you're reading, and enjoying it, you take frequent and extensive breaks just to prolong how long you're immersed in it? This is what I experienced reading this book。 Much like many other reviewers, I picked up this book because it was on a list of Namjoon reads that I saw on the internet, but just a few pages in, I knew it was going to have a profound effect on me。 Before the coffee gets cold transports you to a cafe unlike any other, one where you can transport Have you ever read a book that as you're reading, and enjoying it, you take frequent and extensive breaks just to prolong how long you're immersed in it?
